Garment Technologist Vacancy

As a Garment Technologist at Aura, you will play a pivotal role in our production process, ensuring every garment meets our exacting standards of quality, fit, and craftsmanship. This is a hands-on role suited to someone with exceptional sewing skills, strong technical understanding, and a meticulous eye for detail.

Working within our Devon atelier, you will contribute to the creation of high-end, made-to-order ceremonial garments, collaborating closely with our production team to deliver outstanding results to defined deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and accurately interpret technical specifications, patterns, and design instructions
  • Cut fabrics precisely according to patterns and layout guidelines, ensuring accuracy and efficient material use
  • Sew, stitch, and assemble garments using industrial sewing machines, overlockers, steam pressing equipment, and specialist tools, as well as hand-stitching where required
  • Carry out in-process and final quality control checks to ensure consistency, precision, and adherence to Aura’s standards
  • Work collaboratively with the production team to coordinate workflow and meet production schedules
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors and colleagues to support smooth and efficient production operations

Aura is an Exeter-based atelier specialising in high-end, made-to-order ceremonial garments for academic, ecclesiastical, and military institutions. From Chancellor gowns and doctoral hoods to embroidered vestments and altar textiles, every piece is handmade in our Devon workshop using traditional British tailoring techniques and heritage fabrics.

We proudly export over 40% of our work to the USA, supporting international universities, churches, and ceremonial organisations that value craftsmanship, provenance, and precision.

As Aura continues to grow, we are entering a pivotal new chapter expanding our capabilities while preserving the artistry at the heart of our craft.

Our workshop operates from 7am - 3pm Monday - Friday and you would be expected to work within our standard working operating hours. 

Place of Work

Your primary place of work will be Aura’s headquarters at Unit 51, Exeter Business Centre, Marsh Barton. Any future relocation would be communicated in advance and would remain within a 20-mile radius.

Occasional travel may be required for training and development purposes. All travel expenses, daily allowances, and working hours will be covered.

Qualifications & Experience

To succeed in this role, you will ideally have:

  • Proven experience as a Garment Technologist, Seamstress, or Sewing Machine Operator, supported by a portfolio demonstrating strong garment construction skills
  • Excellent machine sewing and hand-stitching abilities, including high-quality finishing techniques
  • A sound understanding of garment construction, fabric properties, and sewing terminology
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work efficiently under pressure without compromising quality
  • A good standard of written and spoken English, with strong reading comprehension skills to accurately follow technical instructions, specifications, and production documentation
